An oversized blazer is the single most useful thing you can own in October. It works over almost everything, it makes a plain outfit look deliberate, and it solves the problem of mornings that start at 48 degrees and end at 72.
But oversized is the part people get stuck on. Too big and you look like you borrowed it. Here are five ways we actually wear ours.
1. Over a white tee and straight denim
The default, and the reason to own one. A plain white tee, straight denim, loafers or a clean sneaker. The blazer does all the work, which is exactly the point.
The one rule: tuck the tee. Front-tuck is enough. An oversized blazer over an untucked tee reads as two shapeless layers instead of one intentional one.
2. Over a knit dress
This is the workday version. A knit midi dress underneath gives you a defined line, and the blazer adds structure at the shoulder without a second thought.
It also solves the transitional-weather problem better than a coat does. You keep it on in the office and take it off at lunch.
3. Tonal, with pleated trousers
If you want the blazer to read as tailoring rather than a layer, pair it with something in the same family. Pleated trousers in a neutral, a fine-gauge knit underneath, one piece of gold jewelry.
Keep the shoes simple. A tonal outfit with a loud shoe stops being tonal.
4. Belted
The trick nobody uses enough. Add a belt at the waist over the closed blazer and the whole silhouette changes — oversized through the shoulder, defined through the middle. It's the difference between wearing a blazer and styling one.
Works best with a wide leg underneath, like black wide-leg denim, so the proportion stays balanced.
5. Over a summer dress, in September
Don't retire the warm-weather pieces yet. A slip or cami dress under an oversized blazer is one of the best transitional outfits there is, and it buys those dresses another six weeks.
Add a boot instead of a sandal and the whole thing reads as fall.
A note on fit
Oversized should mean roomy through the body and shoulder, not long in the sleeve. If the cuff covers your knuckles, the blazer is too big rather than oversized. Roll it twice.
And check the shoulder seam. On a well-cut oversized blazer it sits past your natural shoulder on purpose, but it should still sit flat. If it collapses, no amount of styling fixes it.
Our Oversized Plaid Blazer is in The Fall Collective now, along with the rest of what arrived this week. Most pieces come in single-digit quantities and don't come back.
